Very short sessions built around sound, colour, movement and naming the world. Success at this stage is joyful attention, not output.
4–5
Explore
Children start connecting ideas: letters make sounds, numbers mean quantity, feelings have names. Sessions get slightly longer and more hands-on.
5–6
Build
Blending sounds into words, adding and taking away, planning a drawing before starting it. Children begin to work on something across several days.
6–7
Grow
Longer projects, reading short passages, explaining their thinking, handling disagreements and taking responsibility for their own safety and routines.
